The types of hearing loss are Sensorineural, Conductive, and Mixed. Patients often complain of not paying attention or missing details of a conversation. They may also have associated tinnitus, vertigo, pain, discharge, or neurological symptoms.

Investigations:

  • Rinne’s and Weber’s Tests

    • Conductive - Rinne’s Bone > Air. Weber’s lateralises to the affected ear.

    • Sensorineural - Rinne’s Air > Bone. Weber’s lateralises to the normal ear.

  • Audiometry - Subjective test that measures the quietest sounds a person can hear at different frequencies in each ear

  • Objective tests

    • Otoacoustic emissions (OAE) – Test of outer hair cell cochlear function

    • Auditory Brain-stem evoked responses (ABR) – Test of auditory nerve function
