Laryngitis

Also known as Croup.


Causes:

  • Parainfluenza (80%)

  • Pertussis (Whooping cough)

  • Diphtheria


Presentation:

  • Children - Barking cough that’s worse at night

  • Adults - Hoarse voice, Persistent cough


Management:

  • Usually self-limiting so managed supportively

    • Speak as little as possible

    • Stay hydrated

    • Throat lozenges

    • Gargle warm salty water

  • Single dose of PO Dexamethasone

  • Nebulised Adrenaline if moderate/severe
