Otalgia/Earache
Most cases (50%) of otalgia are non-otological, being referred pain from other sources, such as the throat and teeth.
Differentials if the patient complains of:
Fever - Otitis Externa/Media, Flu, Cold
Hearing loss - Ear wax build up, Perforated ear drum
Tootache - Dental abscess, Children teething
Dysphagia/odynophagia - Sore throat, Tonsillitis
Management:
Analgesia
Warm/Cold flannel to relieve pain
Treat underlying cause
