Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) is also known as Grave’s Ophthalmopathy. It's an autoimmune condition that attacks the tissue surrounding the eye. In most cases, the same condition that causes TED also affects the thyroid gland, causing Grave’s disease.

Here, the eye muscles, eyelids, tear glands and fatty tissues behind eye become inflamed and swollen, causing the eyes to bulge out.
