Functional Neurological Disorders

Functional neurological disorder is where a patient experiences neurological symptoms that aren’t associated with an organic cause. These symptoms include:

  • Limb weakness

  • Blackouts

  • Movement disorders e.g. tremors, dystonia, myoclonus

  • Sensory dysfunction

  • Loss of/Double vision

  • Dysarthria


Differentials - MS, Parkinson’s, Myasthenia Gravis


Investigations:

  • History and examination

  • Investigations to exclude organic causes


Management - MDT approach and symptomatic relief
