Bullous Pemphigoid

This is a chronic, acquired autoimmune, sub-epidermal blistering disease.


Presentation:

  • Typically affects the elderly

  • Severe itch and large, tense bullae (fluid-filled blisters), which rupture to form crusted erosions

  • Usually involves flexor surfaces of limbs, and it may be localised to one area, or widespread on the trunk and proximal limbs

A biopsy is usually required for a diagnosis.


It's managed with systemic corticosteroids.
