Erythema Multiforme

This is a mild, self-limiting, potentially recurring muco-cutaneous inflammatory condition. Its causes include:

  • Infection (90%) - HSV1, CMV, EBV, Influenza

  • IBD

  • Hep C

  • Leukaemia


It presents with:

  • Target lesions (resemble a bull’s eye) - These usually erupt over 24-48 hours, and lasts for 1-2 weeks

    • Typically presents with a symmetrical distribution of lesions over the dorsal surfaces of the extensor extremities with minimal mucous membrane involvement

It's managed with:

  • Emollients

  • Topical/Oral steroids
