Erythema Nodosum

This is a type of panniculitis (fat inflammation), characterised by tender, non-ulcerated, erythematous nodules located most commonly on the anterior shins.

NO cause is found in 60% of cases, but some causes include:

  • Drugs e.g. abx

  • Oral contraceptives

  • Sarcoidosis or Lofgren’s syndrome

  • Ulcerative colitis, Chron’s disease, or Bechet’s disease

  • Infection - TB, HSV etc.


Management:

  • Bed rest and leg elevation

  • NSAIDs

  • Treatment of underlying cause
