Anovulatory Cycles

Anovulatory cycles are menstrual cycles without the release of an egg. This is most likely to occur during the extremes of reproductive age (very young or peri-menopause).

Even though no egg is released, some may they still experience Withdrawal Bleeding.

Causes:

  • Severe changes to diet and/or exercise

  • Prolonged stress

  • PCOS

  • Menopause

Presentation:

  • Period coming later or Spotting mid-cycle

    • Spotting is also a sign of implantation bleeding in early pregnancy, so can be hard to tell if anovulation or not

  • Longer cycles

  • Change in premenstrual symptoms
