Early Pregnancy

The first sign of pregnancy is a missed period. The other early signs include:

  • Metallic taste in mouth

  • Light PV spotting

  • Cramping, similar to period pains

  • Sore breasts

  • Morning sickness

  • Tiredness

  • New food likes and dislikes

  • Heightened sense of smell

  • Needing to pee more frequently

  • Milky white pregnancy discharge from vagina

  • Chloasma faciei or the “Mask of pregnancy” - Darkened skin on face or brown patches

  • Thicker, shinier hair


The main differentials to consider during early pregnancy are:

  • Miscarriage

  • Ectopic pregnancy

  • Hyperemesis Gravidarum

  • Molar Pregnancy

In any female patient of reproductive age, THINK PREGNANCY!! - They’re pregnant until proven otherwise


In any female patient of reproductive age with abdominal pain +/- PV bleeding, THINK ECTOPIC PREGNANCY!! - They have an ectopic pregnancy until proven otherwise
