Menstruation and Menstrual Disorders

When taking a menstrual history, always include:

• LMP (Last menstrual period)

• Age of menarche and any changes in cycles over time

• Cycle - regular/irregular

• Clots/Flooding

• Post coital bleeding

• Intermenstrual bleeding

• Contraception

• Impact on quality of life

• Systemic or iatrogenic causes eg hypothyroidism & anticoagulants/ exogenous hormones

• Other associated symptoms

Menstrual disorders include:

• Endometriosis

• Adenomyosis

• Fibroids

• Abnormal Uterine Bleeding (AUB)

• PCOS

• Anovulatory Cycles

• Premenstrual Syndrome
