Acute Kidney Injury

Risk factors:

  • Dehydration - Dependence on others for access to fluids

  • Sepsis

  • Nephro-urological, cardiac or liver disease

  • Malignancy and/or bone marrow transplant

  • Hx of taking nephrotoxic drugs e.g. ACEi, ARBs, NSAIDs, Aminoglycosides


Presentation

  • Oliguria – less frequent, drier nappies

  • Oedema – usually gradual onset

  • Fatigue

  • N+V

  • Flank pain if post-renal obstruction

  • Signs of congestive heart failure are very late findings


Investigations

  • Bloods – FBC, U&E, Bone profile, Albumin

  • Urine dip

  • US KUB
