Hypoglycaemia

This is defined as a Glucose level < 2.5 mmol/L.


Always properly attend to babies with:

  • Risk factors for hypoglycaemia e.g. GDM

  • S+S of hypoglycaemia (see below)

  • Persistent or refractory hypoglycaemia


Presentation - Hypotonia, Lethargy, Poor feeding, Hypothermia, Apnoea, Pallor


Management

  • Encourage effective feeding

  • Buccal 40% glucose gel 200mg/kg if 1-1.9 mmol/L

  • Bolus IV 10% glucose 2.5ml/kg if < 1mmol/L, then start infusion at 90ml/kg/day
