Talipes/Club Foot

This is characterised by the ankles being in a plantarflexed and inverted position.

It can be of 2 types:

  • Positional – Muscles slightly tight around ankle but bones are unaffected, so foot can still be moved into its normal position

  • Structural – Involves bones of foot and ankle

Management

  • Ponseti method - Very useful way of treating club foot

    • Foot’s position is manipulated with a cast, and this is repeated multiple time until the foot is in the correct position

  • Surgery – if Ponseti method fails or can’t be used
