Viral Gastroenteritis
The most common causes are:
Rotavirus – most common cause in infants
Norovirus – most common cause in all ages
Adenovirus
It presents with Diarrhoea, N+V, and abdominal pain.
The main concern in children is Dehydration. Other complications with this are Reactive arthritis, and GBS, which are much less common.
Differentials to consider:
Bacterial gastroenteritis
Lactose intolerance
Coeliac disease
CF
IBD
IBS
Management:
Fluids – Most likely IV as patient likely to be vomiting
Faecal MC&S
Infection control – Child needs to stay off school
