Viral Gastroenteritis

The most common causes are:

  • Rotavirus – most common cause in infants

  • Norovirus – most common cause in all ages

  • Adenovirus


It presents with Diarrhoea, N+V, and abdominal pain.


The main concern in children is Dehydration. Other complications with this are Reactive arthritis, and GBS, which are much less common.


Differentials to consider:

  • Bacterial gastroenteritis

  • Lactose intolerance

  • Coeliac disease

  • CF

  • IBD

  • IBS


Management:

  • Fluids – Most likely IV as patient likely to be vomiting

  • Faecal MC&S

  • Infection control – Child needs to stay off school
