Reflux Nephropathy
In reflux nephropathy, there's a reflux of urine back up from the bladder, through the ureters, and to the kidney. It's also known as the Vesico-ureteric reflux, and it caused by an abnormality of the ureters during foetal development, where it doesn’t pinch off as the bladder contracts.
Usually presents in neonates and disappears as the baby grows.
Presents with frequent UTIs.
Investigations:
MCUG - Used to see and diagnose the VUR as the urine flows backwards from the bladder
DMSA - Used to assess for any renal scarring later down the line
